4. Qutub Minar

India’s tallest minaret, the Qutub Minar, is believed to commemorate the victory and start of the Mughal era in India. This 73 meter high tower has five floors. Interestingly, the base diameter of the structure is 14.3 meters, while it tapers down to 2.7 meters once it reaches the top. Qutub Minar takes inspiration from the Minar of Jam built in Afghanistan. It is believed that Qutub ud-Din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, started the construction of the minaret around 1192. However, the task was taken over by Aibak’s son-in-law and successor, Iltutmish, who added three more storeys to the minaret for prayer in the year 1220. Red sandstone was used to build the first three floors, while marble and sandstone were used to build the last two floors. India’s first mosque Quwwat-ul-Islam is at the foot of the Qutub Minar.
